We were pleased to see so many familiar faces coming back
in 2001 for another round at the lodge, and also to be able to show some nice
new folks the wonders of the wilderness, which we are so fortunate to call our
home. I always consider our guests as friends and we look forward
to seeing you all again.
Summer 2001 was a spectacular season! Fishing was super,
the lodge is spiffier than ever, we have a great new charter boat and a crew
here to please!
In fishing news, Gold Coast Lodge is proud to announce 3
new lodge records! First came the 56
lb. King Salmon caught by Pamela Simeon of OR. We were all awed and amazed at
the size of this beautiful fish, which really gave Pam a run for her money.
Next on
board was a humongous 58 lb. Ling Cod landed by 13-year old Ian Schmitt of FL –
check out the picture of this monster! Lastly in the season, came our all-time
biggest King Salmon, a 73 lb. beauty taken by father and son team, Bud & Adam
Jones of FL. Together they brought their catch of a lifetime up from a depth of
40 feet while fishing for bait and were barely able to pull it into the skiff.
Great job, guys! This could very well be the largest King Salmon caught by a
sports fisherman in SE Alaska this year. Halibut was only slightly off this
summer with the 181 ½ lb. Catch by Larry Bailey, Jr., of OR at the top of a very
fine 172 ½ pounder handled solo by a very determined
Lindsay Duplessis of CA.
Congratulations Pam, Ian, Bud & Adam, Larry and Lindsay! Coho again were red
hot!! We certainly hope that all our guests had a great time fishing and
enjoying the rare, beautiful wilderness experience and personal service that’s
available only at the Gold Coast Lodge.
Congratulations are also in order for Captain Dave for
winning the
2001 Great Alaska Sportsfishing Championship held in September 2001. Dave
competed against a line-up of veteran charter captains and, may we say, crushed
the competition – would we expect any less from Dave?
In Lodge news, we have super cushy, new leather furniture
for after-fishing relaxation and a great recliner/massage chair to get you ready
for your next day’s adventure. We’ve redecorated several of the bedrooms,
installed new railings all around the upper deck and updated our front porch so
everyone can enjoy the beautiful outdoors in comfort.
We are super pleased to have acquired a beautiful new
charter boat, the Chacon Eagle. The Eagle
is
a gorgeous custom-made, fully equipped 28-foot fishing machine designed to
deliver you to the best fishing spots in speed, comfort and style. It’s the
only charter boat in southern SE Alaska to have earned the U.S. Coast Guard’s 5
Star rating! This rating means we have met the highest safety standards
recommended by the Coast Guard. We’re very happy to have the new boat, as your
comfort, safety and enjoyment (as well as catching lots of fish) are our
priorities.
Last year was a banner year for Gold Coast Lodge. We were
filled almost to capacity and expect more of the same for this coming summer.
If you have a preferred time slot, we suggest booking earlier rather than later,
as reservations are already coming in.
In every way, 2001 was our best season ever. We thank you
for your patronage, and look forward to having you back. We wish you well and
hope to be hooking up with you soon!
Dave Ausman
The editor of Alaska Outdoors
Magazine called Gold Coast Lodge "..one of the nicest facilities
I have
been to in Alaska." Visitors to the Gold Coast Lodge get to live and play right in the
middle of a vast Alaska wilderness spectacle with no fear of having to "rough
it." By all means, bring the family and friends. Fishing
for King (Chinook), Silver (Coho), Red (Sockeye), Pink (Humpback) and Chum (Dog) Salmon
is always exciting. They are here- big, hungry and wild! And, if that's
not enough Gold Coast Lodge offers some of the greatest halibut fishing in
Alaska. With David Ausman as guide, Guests of Gold Coast Lodge have won the
Ketchikan Halibut Derby 7 years in a row! David was "Top Guide in the 1990
Great Alaska Sports fishing Championship. Having guided 1st Place in 8 derbies
in 7 years, David Ausman is the winningest guide in Alaska sports fishing
history!
Gold Coast Lodge is anchored in Moira Sound on the
southeast coast of Prince
of Wales Island (about 35 miles west of Ketchikan, Alaska.), Gold Coast Lodge is the only
lodge on the southern third of the third largest island under the U.S. flag. The
isolation of this area means you will be fishing in some of the last remaining
pristine wilderness in the world. Why not discover what our returning clients
already know? It's tough to top Gold Coast Lodge.
Let's go Fishing!
